Professor Robert Schneider of New York: Transferable Skills and the Professional and Personal Dimensions of Sport’s Future
Professor Robert Schneider is Director of the Sport Management Programme at the State University of New York at Brockport. His academic and professional work focuses on sport management, sport ethics, leadership and the organisational development of sport systems.
In Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, Professor Schneider will present his research examining the relationship between competitive sport, self-focus and success in life.
The presentation will form part of the International Conference of MontenegroSport, which will be held from 24 to 27 September 2026. The conference is already attracting considerable interest not only among European researchers, but also within the wider international scientific community.
Under the motto “A European Bridge to the Future of Sporting Excellence,” participants in Podgorica will discuss innovations, achievements, synergy and the continuing challenges facing sport.
“Achieving standards-based excellence in competitive sport is largely an individual endeavour that requires a strong focus on oneself in order to advance personal development as effectively as possible, most commonly through the acquisition of transferable skills.
“Self-interest, in its literal sense, may be viewed as a moral virtue necessary for success, further confirming the importance of self-focus when an individual seeks to develop transferable skills effectively through competitive sport.
“Transferable skills are not limited to a particular subject or context. This makes it possible to apply them across different professional fields, as well as within the more personal areas of life that directly affect the individual beyond sport,” explains the distinguished scholar, who will be one of the plenary speakers at the conference organised by MontenegroSport.
Professor Schneider emphasises that this concept has already received considerable scientific support. Numerous researchers have highlighted the need for athletes to recognise the transferable skills they acquire through sport competition and to learn how to apply them in other areas of life.
When properly developed and used, a broad range of skills acquired through competitive sport can contribute to both professional and personal achievement, creating a foundation for long-term success in life.
Distinguished Plenary Speakers from Across Europe and Beyond
In addition to Professor Robert Schneider of New York, a number of other distinguished scholars have already been confirmed as plenary speakers.
Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of sport sciences, the confirmed speakers represent a wide range of scientific and professional fields.
They include Matej Majerič of Ljubljana, Robert Trybulski of Katowice, Damir Sekulić of Split, Slavko Rogan of Switzerland, Velibor Spalević and Danilo Tošić of Podgorica, Gabriela Luptáková and Branislav Antala of Slovakia, and Borko Katanić of Serbia.
Through their respective presentations, they will introduce participants to the latest findings and developments in sport sciences from a variety of perspectives.
The list of invited speakers from several other highly respected scientific institutions will be completed in the coming days.

The journals will publish scientific and professional papers presented at the conference in Podgorica. All three are published by the Montenegrin Sports Academy.
